Sufi perspective enliven the discourse of environmental conservation. Hamka is one of Quranic commentators that offered it. Through thematic method, Hamka‟s interpretation in his al-Azhar can be mapped into two main themes: First, relationship between human and nature. For Hamka, the relationship should work proportionally based on the principle of tauhid. Second, concept of ihsan as ethical value to the environment, involving: (1) efficient utilization of natural resources; (2) conservation responsibility, and (3) environmental reforestation. According to Hamka, spiritual quality of devotion (taqwa>) and gratitude (syukr) is a benchmark
in maintaining natural resources sparingly. In addition, the responsibility of the mandate bearer (khali>fah) is supposed to keep the environmental systems and procedures predetermined by God. The responsibility is a line of duty for every human being, as an individual and a leader. Hamka also emphasized reforestation strides as a gesture of charity (ihsan) over the environment. The gesture is also a form of gratitude to Allah‟s favors.
